You're Working On Getting "There"
If only we can speed up time or magically end at the desired destination in our lives. The degree. The job. The relationship. The savings goal for a down payment on a house. The fitness goal. Whatever it is, it means something to you. But, time is not your friend. The work you put in and the effort you display to make it is important. And it’s hard. Giving up becomes part of the process. Imposter syndrome may even take over. You question yourself. Why am I doing this? What’s the point of all this? What progress am I making?
Everything you’re doing is to get you there.
Getting there is the goal. Not holding your degree. Not landing the job or promotion. These are the direct results of the work you put in. The effort you display. Use this as encouragement that getting there is the point. That is the job. That is the goal. Just showing up, each day.
Too often you are faced with difficult moments in the pursuit of something. Remind yourself that getting there is why you’re doing it. Getting there is done by doing what you can here and now. When you feel stuck, say to yourself I’m getting there. When you feel like the work you’re doing is showing no results, say to yourself I’m getting there.
Accomplishing anything is simply effort, day after day, stacked on top of each other. Working on a relationship, your fitness, your degree or saving for a down payment towards a house. None of this happens overnight in a flash. It takes time. It takes days. That is all. A number of days that once you pile them together, it get’s you closer. It get’s you there .
The work is to get there. Sure you have a one hour workout and feel nothing. So you stare at the number on the screen and it’s nowhere near enough for a down payment towards a home. This is the moment. This is where and why the work, each day, is getting you there.
Don’t get discouraged. Don’t defeat yourself.
As the expression goes, pray like it depends on God, work like it depends on me.
