Your Whole Life Starts Over
Everything changes when you have kids. It doesn't matter if you had them at nineteen or thirty-nine. What you’ve been through or done, matters none when you have kids.
Actress Jennifer Lawrence in a Vogue interview, says, “I felt like my whole life started over again, the morning after I gave birth. Like now is day one of my life. I just starred. I was just in love.”
Parents, we know this experience. Mainly, perhaps with your first child. How you look at him/her and instantly just melt. The intense love and overwhelm. Nothing else in the world matters. Not the stress at work. Or the news headlines. Your child being here, is the only headline. Everything changes. You went from not being a parent to, now you are. You have responsibilities now. Obligations. You can’t just get up and leave whenever you want. You tip-toe around the house when the baby is asleep. The TV might be on less or the volume really low. Every small noise might bother you as you do not want to disturb your newborn.
As it happened to me, today you can hear a child cry and completely understand that position. Before kids, a crying baby may have been annoying or you somehow felt it was an inconvenience to you. I was at a store some weeks back and a daughter around 2-4 years old was fighting her parents on something. As I walked I smiled the only way a parent knows how, when you’ve been exactly where they are now. And you made it. Even though, it feels like you won’t in that moment as a parent. We change. Your whole life starts over. You are not the same person. You eat more chicken nuggets as a parent than ever before. You love Disney movies and soundtracks of Disney movies. You take on the personality and interests of your kid. Or, that is the hope.
The world changes every moment and as a parent you should change. You don’t have to change. However, if you don’t, you’ll miss so much with your kids. You will be left behind. Don’t resist the change. It is a beautiful transition in life.
