Your Mind Is Not Your Friend
There will be someone who annoys you or angers you. Someone that will intentionally cut you off in traffic or take your coffee from the mobile order shelf. Someone will make you feel insecure, anxious, jealous, afraid, or influence stress. Why does this happen? And why do you have to be at the receiving end of it all?
Your mind is not your friend. All of the things that happen are made worse in our minds. There is an expression in ancient stoic philosophy that states, we suffer more in imagination than in reality. Another, we are dyed by the color of our thoughts. You see these random acts in your day to day and think the worst of them. You say to yourself, of course someone will take my coffee or they’re right, I can’t do this.
I once heard and I cannot place who said it, “our minds are complex production studios. creating stories, narratives and ideas.
We will believe almost anything our minds tell us. It does not stop working to create the visions and illusions we see. So how is our mind a tool? A friend? It depends how you use it. It all depends on how you let your mind use you, and control you. No doubt the mind is limitless in its ability to do good, solve problems and create things for the world. Yet, it is just as limitless in its pursuit to deceive you and control you. To keep you stuck or insecure. To keep you from believing in yourself. With time and practice you can regain control of your mind and have the ability to pull away from thoughts that are not productive.
Your mind is not your friend.
