You Have More Room
“Apply yourself to thinking through difficulties—hard times can be softened, tight squeezes widened, and heavy loads made lighter for those who can apply the right pressure.” - Seneca, On Tranquility of Mind, 10.4b
For some, pressure bursts pipes. And for others, pressure, you eat it for breakfast. We’re all unique in our ability to handle the tension, pressures and difficulties of life. But, too often we choose the easy choice. The path of least resistance. Because it’s easier. Because our minds like and prefer easy.
By pushing through the hard times and difficulties you build tougher skin. A kind of resilience that prepares you for the next difficulty. An easy life becomes easy after dealing with and handling difficulty. With time you are armed with the tools and strength—mentally and physically—to handle the load of today, and tomorrow.
When you face a difficult choice, it becomes less difficult when you think through it. Maybe you make a list of pros and cons. You might consult with advisors; friends and family. You use the lifelines in life that are available.
When money is tight, you become resourceful in how you use it. Making a tight situation, wider. The money has not changed. Only the way you use and manage it.
I like weight lifting metaphors. For any of you who have gone through any kind of physical training, you know very well what I mean. The first time in the gym you could not lift the weight. It was hard, you exerted yourself, you hated it and you did not want to do it again. But, you kept going. With time, the weight increased. Plate by plate you were able to lift more. The load became lighter.
When you apply pressure in the difficulties, tight squeezes and loads in your life, you end up winning at the end of it. Able to handle life better and carry the loads. It is a consistent approach to not give up. Face what is in front of you. Be determined to figure it out. To carry the load.
The right pressure. Not pressure against yourself. Pressure towards what you face. What stands in the path becomes the path. What stands in your way, becomes the way.
You have more room in your mind and body to handle it. You can do it. I’m a lifeline and I’m here to help.
