Parents we’ve been here. A long day at the office or work was busy. Today the energy may not be there for your kids and understandably so. Nonetheless, you get down on your knees and play with them. Your back might hurt. Your eyes fried. Your head doesn’t feel like it’s on straight. But here you are, present, with your kids. Afterall, that is the job.
“Hey, can we just pick one toy?” You say. You think to yourself again, why can’t we pick one toy?
A mess ensues of every toy at the disposal of your kid. And now you’re dreading the clean up, since well, you’ll eventually have to do. Plus, you still have dinner and bedtime routine to handle.
Parents you are the toy. Your kids are just excited you’re home. They missed you. One toy will not do it. You are the toy. They want to play with you. This is a stark reminder of the strength it takes to be a mom, dad or guardian. You spend the entire day at work doing someone else’s work. Making your boss happy by putting out a fire.
Making sure you play Inbox Zero with your emails. This, a method of productivity to ensure you leave the day with zero unread/unaddressed emails.
At home it’s no different. Except, you get to play with your kids. Meanwhile at work, you have to solve a problem. Playing with your kids is a privilege. You can decide to do it or not, unlike your tasks at work where someone is waiting for your part. It is quite special when your kids wait for you to get home and they have a burst of energy you wish you had. A burst of energy you cannot explain and can be rather overwhelming for you.
Nothing else matters. You’re home. Leave work at work. Distract yourself with the play and creativity of your kids. You are the toy. Let them use you. After all, one day, you’ll wish you had that time with them again. Don’t miss it today while you have it because your tired or had a bad day. Your kids should never carry that load. You’re the adult. You took the job. You worked overtime. You kept the job with the long commute.
You are the toy. Now let them play.
