What Really Matters
There’s a story of San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich and his then assistant coach Mike Brown.
Brown was going through a divorce. He was with his kids at the airport to get them on a flight home to their mother. Brown, was headed to a flight of his own with his team for their next game. One of Brown’s kids doesn’t want to leave. Parents, we’ve seen this. Whether at the park or at a friends house. It can get quite intense.
So Brown calls Popovich (Pop), and asks for a few extra minutes. Pop informs Brown to take care of his kids. Some time goes by and apparently Brown calls Pop again, needing more time. This is the moment that changed it all. Pop tells Mike Brown to take care of his kids. And, if he sees Brown on the team airplane, he’s “fired.”
Mike Brown ends up spending a few extra days with his kids and they go home to mom.
Parents, we’ve all been in Mike Brown’s shoes. Trying to do it all. Work and parent. Uphold our obligations as adults and try to strike a balance with our kids. What if we had that person to give us more time? To extend grace? Push back the due date or deadline? What if you can be like Gregg Popovich for someone else?
What if, you can do that for someone else? We all need help. No one can do it all alone. It takes a village. So if you are missing a village of your own find one. More importantly, be that village for someone else. Afterall, how do you suppose you build one to begin with?
Thought Provoking Questions : Where and how can you extend grace to someone who clearly needs it? Can you?
Daily I write and release a daily meditation. A quick read. Sharing wisdom and asking thought-provoking questions. Influenced by the obstacles, success and failures in my life and of others. Using history, books, current events, philosophy, and ancient wisdom. These writings are actionable, thought-provoking, designed to make your life better.
These writings are not to push a way of thinking on the reader or to force you into a certain philosophy or methodology. Rather to give you practical and real ways to handle life. This is an added tool. My writing is simply a discussion, a discourse, with all the material I read, watch, hear and consume.
