What Is Contentment?

Greek philosopher Epicurus said, “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.”
Does this apply to you? The bigger house, the nicer car or always looking to date someone more physically attractive than your last. While you chase what you don’t have you inevitably lose what you do have. We see this with wealthy individuals, consistently seeking more. The next deal, another zero. Meanwhile they don’t have a relationship with their kids and are probably divorced and on their way to divorce number two.
We see this with how many of us overspend or use credit cards for things that we think make us happy. However, since we are on a path for the next thing we never feel happy. Racking up debt to just feel good. Getting into a home you cannot afford or selling yourself to the car you have an eight year loan on.
By being happy with what you have you can avoid all of this and more. Instead of desiring what you don’t, start to think about the things you have that other people wished they had. Think of the people who have much less. The homeless man or woman at the corner holding a sign. The mom running to a shelter with a young child since she has nowhere else to go and is being abused by her partner.
WAKE UP! You have a great life. Sure things suck at times. Life can throw us many curveballs that are hard to handle. Look how far you’ve come, even if life is hitting you hard right now. Love who you have, take care of what you own. Appreciate it all. It is all one event away from vanishing. A home is one fire away from being destroyed. A car can be stolen at any minute. Your credit card will be maxed out before you know it. The lust you seek for an even more attractive person can be taken away from you or them.
