If you think you can go through life without some sort of failure, you’re wrong. You will fail that test. You will miss that shot playing basketball. You will walk up to the person you like and get rejected. The promotion you’re after is not for certain. You kid will make you feel like a bad parent.
We must approach success and failure the way Friedrich Nietzsche explains:
“A thinker sees his own actions as experiments and questions—as attempts to find out something. Success and failure are for him answers above all.”
Success and failure for a thinker are all the same. Because the attempts are there. By putting in the effort you either succeed or learn what did not work. You never just fail, unless that is how you look at it. Failing shows which way to avoid. Which approach will not make the cut.
There are two kinds of failure. First, by never trying. Maybe you are afraid or don’t believe you can. Or like so many, you’re waiting for the perfect time. Spending so much time planning, thinking and brainstorming. Well, the time is now. Just start. You’ll learn more by trying and failing then waiting for the perfect time. Someday is not a day of the week. Someday, however, is today! There is nothing to learn by not trying and this will destroy you from the inside out.
The second type of failure is from an adventurous spirit and mindset. Being bold. Taking risks. You know the time is now and that experience is the best teacher. You know that by failing, really what that means is you’re learning. With each failed attempt you get smarter, stronger and more resilient. By taking action you will find out what works faster then by sitting still.
There are two kinds of failure: doing nothing or failing on purpose. Which type are you?
