The Mastery Of Kobe Bryant
NBA player Gerald Henderson was a rookie for the Charlotte Bobcats. The night of a game with the LA Lakers, Gerald got to the arena early. Kobe Bryant was the only person there, taking shots hours before game time.
Kobe kept missing his practice shots. “There’s something wrong with the rim,” he told Henderson. “I was missing shots I don’t miss. I’m pretty sure it’s low, a quarter of an inch.”
Henderson was thinking that Kobe was just off. “Right… or you’re just off today.”
Later, Henderson saw workers messing with the rim. He walks over to the workers and asked what they were up to. They say; “Oh, someone notified us that it was a little lower than regulation, but don’t worry, we adjusted it to 10 feet.”
Kobe scored his 26 that night.
This was the pre-game ritual for Kobe, for each game at home or traveling to another city. Kobe put in the time, enough of it to know when the rim was off. He would work up a full sweat, then go out there in front of thousands of fans and do it all over again.
The lesson here is to continuously work towards the thing you want to achieve. When you feel like you’ve made it, is when the real work starts. When you have to go out there, hours before a game, and take 500 practice shots.
Or when you pay off your debt that you realize that your net worth is now at zero and it’s time to work towards building wealth.
Don’t settle for okay or just right. Keep going. Become a master.
