There Is No Magic Pill
You may know someone who has gone to rehab to fight addiction. In fact, it could very well be you. Actor, Alexander Ludwig in a recent podcast says, there is no magic pill in rehab.
It is in fact, a complete misconception. Rehab, twelve step programs, or any other form of support groups for addicts, has nothing to do with the program itself. Or a magic pill. Or vaccine. Or any other substance.
In fighting addiction the work is done day by day. By attending meetings, building a support group, gaining a trusted sponsor and the constant fight towards temptation. The person in rehab does all the work outside of rehab. With the person they see in the mirror.
The same applies in physical therapy. You think someone goes in, gets massaged and stretched and they’re fine. Except what the physical therapist does is give the patient homework. A series of exercises to do at home, in combination with seeing the physical therapist. The person receiving physical therapy does most of the work at home, outside of the doctors office.
You may not be in rehab or laying on a table receiving physical therapy. However, use that example to prove this point; nothing or no one will do the work you are supposed to do. There is no secret potion. There is no magic pill. For an addict or someone with an injury, progress is made at home. The work is done at home. You may not be well at this moment. You might feel stuck, alone, or afraid. The way up and forward is with your first step. Then another. And another. Remember you can do this. We, those of us around you are here to help.
