The Writer
***if you’ve enjoyed this blog for the observations and for the wisdom shared, be on the look out for a new blog based on being a dad. It will release once per week.***
For three years I publicly hit share my writing. One of the scariest things for a writer is to hit “publish,” for the world to read. To see. To judge. To engage with the writing. I’ve been writing longer than three years, however, breaking the seal to all of you, locks it in. I’m a writer.
At a coffee event I attended some weeks back, I was introduced as “Danny, the writer.” Since, that introduction has become a frequent credential. Like M.D. or ESQ. For me writing isn’t a title or a position. Rather, something I just do. A verb, not a noun
The recognition from others is warm to the spirit of the writer inside of me, but not why I do it. To engage with people based on the verb I perform and talk about the most impactful writing they’ve engaged with, is why I do it.
What makes me a writer is I write. What makes you a chef, cook, barber, metal smith, wood worker, artist, creator, stylist, fire artist... is doing the damn thing. Dancers dance.
There is an expression that a painter likes painting and a writer likes having written. Meaning, a painter gets their thrill, love from performing the verb, not talking about the noun. A writer commonly only loves completing, a painter loves getting started. Studies suggest that talking about doing something gives our minds the chemical reaction as if we are actually doing the thing. Nothing beats performing the action in the work or art we love. It is how we get better. It is how we discover new worlds. It is how masterpieces are created. Not by talking of, but doing it.
