In an effort to motivate his sales team, Earl Nightingale would record himself giving pep talks. Earl owned an insurance company and he noticed a change in his team when he talked to them regularly or not. So he recorded what is known as The Strangest Secret, which went on to sell over 1 million copies and it’s one of the first of its kind to do so. Think what a podcast is today, except he did this in the 1950’s. Because of the way he spoke and his use of words, Earl is considered by many one of the most impactful motivational speakers.
“The human mind is the last, great, unexplored continent on earth. It contains riches beyond our wildest dreams. It will return anything we want to plant.” - Earl Nightingale
Here the message is, you become what you think about. If you think negative thoughts you will invariably experience negative events. If you think you cannot do something, you won’t even try. However, if you think you can do something, you will often do more than you expected. The mind as Nightingale says, can be fertile land for anything you put in it. Your mind will grow anything you give it, good or bad.
You are dyed by the color of your thoughts.
So what are you planting in your mind? How is this impacting you and those around you?
Your mind is complex equipment that can do many things. Nightingale describes it as undiscovered because you don’t take the time or make the effort to. It is unknown. You don’t try new things. You do not learn new things. You don’t push yourself outside your comfort zone to discover more. You don’t sit with your thoughts and try to understand them. You surround yourself with noise instead of sitting in silence.
What you can be capable of if you started to discover yourself. What you can do if you plant positive, productive and powerful seeds in the field of your mind. This is the point Nightingale is trying to make.
Go. Now. Start planting the seeds needed so that you can use your mind for its intended purposes.
