The book titled, The Gift of Fear, by Gavin de Becker has the following: what am I choosing to not see right now? What important things are you missing because you chose to worry over introspection, alertness or wisdom?”
This book makes reference to the fact that fear is a good thing. Fear is a gift. The portion quoted above however, highlights something we all miss. No, we should not avoid fear or be paralyzed by it. Fear is not a bad thing. You just cannot let it control you, what you do or don’t do. Do not let fear decide for you. Ultimately you have full control, even when fear is present. In fact, especially so.
When fear has shown its face we only see our perception of said fear. Real or imagined. how do we know if our fear is real if we are the ones that create it in our heads? That is the point of the quote above. By choosing to see fear, what are we not seeing? Hope. A new angle. A way out or a way through. A solution or innovation. Instead of being alert, wise or to look deeper within yourself, you chose to worry.
So when you feel fear, scared, nervous or anxious; ask yourself what am I not seeing by choosing to only see fear?
When you notice these feelings/emotions, start to dig deeper as to what it means. See the fear, yet. But you need to see everything else too!
