There is this frame inspired by Ernest Hemingway that reads: “All first drafts of everything are garbage.”
You’ll notice in that frame that there are edits in red ink. It’s a metaphor of sorts. The first time we do anything we simply are not good at it. This especially true in something creative we pursue. The same is true in any endeavor we decide to take on; a job, course in college, a hobby or recipe. We are supposed to suck at it. Otherwise there would be zero growth, zero progression.
That, is something to embrace, fully. Love that feeling because the result of continued effort and application is getting better. Finally looking up and noticing your’re good at the thing. Sure the first time you suck. So what! Lebron James did not always shoot a basketball well. Serena Williams or Tiger Woods did not always swing great. Effort over a period of time, consistently and with persistence.
It’s true for our favorite writers and authors. Just as it is for us. Eventually the first draft becomes the final draft.
