The Beauty of Zooming In

To all parents out there, I have an exercise I’ll share with you all. I did not know I did this, until I recalled it in my journal one morning. The excerpt from my journal:
“When my daughter and I sit next to each other, I observe her. How her mouth moves while she writes or draws, how her chin sags while she eats, and all the peach fuzz on her face. I notice how her ears connect to the side of her face with bluntness, but elegance. The dimple at the center of her top lip; deep, as if to have a shadow in it. The lines that are drawn on her face, under both cheeks when she smiles without showing teeth. Her perfect symmetry and brightness. Her face has a natural glow. Eyelashes like a horse’s tail. Slinkies as curls. The constant scent she carries of dried apple juice and strawberries. Tiny, perfectly round dimples on her knuckles. The lines on her fingers. The pucker she makes with her lips when she is focused. As if she knows exactly what she does. Four and a half veins on the right side of her forehead; allowing me to look through her. Perhaps her innate ability to look through me. To experience my flaws but love me anyway. Her eyes are like pearls. Her brow, connected, yet artistic. Her body, while never the same and at times funny to look at, priceless. An example of the beauty of God and the unknown nature we are surrounded by. The magic that is science, oh how fascinating. An embodiment of my heart, outside of me. Where the mere papercut she experiences, destroys me! Oh how I love my daughter.”
Maybe since I’m a writer I can create such prose. Or my love and affection towards her may lead to this excerpt. It could be because when I am with her, I zoom in on being present. What she wants to do we do. What she doesn’t, we don’t. Parents your children are the most beautiful, physical thing we will ever get to experience. Love it, embrace it and slow down to see these details. Just being still, being present and zooming in.
