The late author and historian David McCullough (one of my favorite authors) used the same Royal Typewriter to write all of his twelve books. The typewriter is over 70 years old.
“It’s an amazing piece of American manufacturing,” McCullough tells an interviewer. He continues, “most people in the present age wonder why the heck would you want to work on that?”—referring to his typewriter— People tell him all the time “you can go so much faster on a computer.”
McCullough is grounded in “not wanting to go fast.”
Yesterday I wrote about how we are all in a rush. Hers is a man that has written twelve books and millions of words, wanting to go slow.
This is part of the reason why I use a typewriter. The craftsmanship, the art my machines are and being more intentional with what I put on the page. There is no delete or spell check. I’ve grown to love writing and with that I want to slow it all down. To be fully present, connected and give it the best I have. One key punch at a time.
Why go faster? Why are we so obsessed with it?
