A Moving Story of Martin Luther King
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference of 1962 Martin Luther King Jr. was in front of a large, diverse crowd, this in Birmingham, Alabama. He was giving the closing remarks of the conference when a man named Roy James, a white man, walked on stage and began to beat King.
The audience simply watched in disbelief, also thinking this was part of the closing. Some sort of demonstration.
The shocking truth of this is that King let himself be attacked and beaten. He opened himself up to it. He stood in front of Roy James with his arms relaxed at his side. James, stopped, shocked by King’s nonviolent approach and his control. The two were separated and King shouted out, “don’t touch him. We have to pray for him.” King, bloodied, brushed and hurt was whole in his faith. Unbroken. He prayed, everyone sang and King spoke kind words of his attacker. Later the two would have a private word. No charges were brought against James by King.
The display of being above evil. Being above the hate, pain and anger from a white man. King lived his life in this way and encouraged others to do the same. “We must love our white brothers and sisters,” King wrote once.
While in black history month I wanted to convey this event for its power and display of strength, courage, love and staying true to himself.
I have no closing remarks on what this means to us all, reading this. Apply it to your life how you see fit. Sure King was flawed, aren’t we all? He nor we are machines designed without errors. We aren’t superhuman.
However, we can all learn from this.
