Start Journaling
It’s quite amazing what a piece of paper can do. Moreover, the significance a piece of paper can have. We live today in a world where paper is more important than other things. Money. Diplomas. Birth certificates. College transcripts. A resume. A car title or proof of insurance. We can name several more.
What about a journal? This too can have a significant impact in your life and to those who inherit your journals. You may have never journaled before. But let’s stop and look at why it’s important.
Walter Isaacson wrote a biography on Leonardo Da Vinci. His source material for this book are the journals and notes of Da Vinci.
“Five hundred years later, Leonardo’s notebooks are around to astonish and inspire us.” - Walter Isaacson
We have seen the journals of others have an immense impact on the world. Marcus Aurelius, the Roman Emperor, his personal journal has last 2,000 years and is a book titled Meditations.
Anne Frank consistently wrote in her journal and it has survived to us also in book form, The Diary of a Young Girl. She notes that paper is more patient than people.
Mahatma Ghandi’s journals are in museums in Mumbai and Delhi. Here people can see and read all of his thoughts and he considered it a spiritual practice. To him it was an art form and was the equivalent of attending the ashram.
JFK’s notes and doodles are still with us.
Kurt Cobain’s notebooks are still with us. We can see his artistry, his struggle, and where the beginning of hit songs were birthed.
Another piece of paper that is around is The Declaration of Independence.
Issaacon says that paper is one of the best technologies there is or ever will be.
“Fifty years from now, our own notebooks, if we work up the initiative to start them, will be around to astonish and inspire our grandchildren, unlike our tweets and Facebook posts.” - Walter Isaascon
Many of the important people in our history have journaled. This isn’t about being important or status. This is about putting your thoughts down on paper. There is plenty of scientific data to prove how a journal can improve your life. Think of all the stories you can share with children or grand children. Think about always having a companion with you with life is good or bad. A way to sort out your thoughts. A place to vent. A place that is safe for you to talk about anything you want. A journal could be something for your mind and heart. Or, it could be a way to stay on top of your exercise or the recipes you want to try out.
You can capture moments. Have it be a form of meditation. A journal can truly be anything. Imagine five hundred + years later Da Vinci’s journals ares still here. Your journals can be too.
In a world where paper matters, why not start a journal. You can do 5 minutes per day or a page. There are no rules. Just start. You won’t know where it takes you or how your life will improve from it.
