By doing the right thing you’ve already decided that it is. Therefore, all you need to do is act on it. The hope is, the right thing does not hurt, injure, divide, alienate, or segregate anyone. This comes to you in steps. First, you see someone or a group in need. Then, you follow up that need with an act to serve, aid, assist the group or person.
You have reached the conclusion of the act. Often, many of you look for more. What you look for is recognition. The award. The self-advertisement. An act of generosity or of service does not require a parade for your efforts. We see this often when a unanimous donation is made. The donor cares less about being celebrated, they genuinely just want to help.
Yet, here you are. Wanting to record for social media you bringing groceries to someone who needs them. Giving $20 to the homeless person at the corner. Highlighting and boasting about your efforts to give and serve. The ancient stoics believe that you don’t need the third thing. Meaning, first you decide to do the right thing, the just thing. Lastly, you act on the right thing. The third thing is the external validation by doing what is right. Don’t talk about it, be about it.
If you want to help someone or serve in any way, do it because you have the heart to. Decide. Act. The end. No parade or recognition needed. Your name does not need to be present with big, bold letters. Avoid the desire for the third thing. Stop seeking self-advertisement. You’re putting too much effort in having other people see you.
