Scare in Connecticut
Each night I read my daughter “A Halloween Scare in Connecticut”, a book purchased in a local book shop. The book is beautifully written and illustrated. Well, here a kid is scared of monsters. But he’s just curious enough to go find them. When he did, they were just having their annual “Halloween ball.” When encountered by the scariest monster of them all, it is he, the monster that celebrates the kid. By handing him a prize for the costume he’s wearing. “It even scares me and I’m tip-top at scaring,” says the monster.
The boy is confused as all he has on is pajamas. Monster acknowledges him and tells him that’s the scariest thing you can be. Yourself.
Each night this is the part that hits me about this book. How many kids, including myself as a child, could not be ourselves. Maybe we were not given the space or encouragement. Or maybe we didn’t know how.
As parents, encourage your kids to be who they are. Love all things they are into and just as importantly, try to surround them around other kids that like the same things. So each kid can feel loved, supported and that they can be themselves. Exploration of activities and hobbies will help. Also, giving kids space. There has to be a balance we strike between staying with them and giving them the freedom to grow and discover.
