We can meditate in many forms and many things can be meditative. We don’t have to sit on the floor, with sage lit and attempt to focus on our breath.
By meditating on the bad, what we do is expect the worst to happen. So if it does, then we are not thrown off or caught off guard. And if it doesn’t then we are not impacted negatively. Planning the worst to happen gives us the tools we need to find a way out. We prepare and train ourselves for the unexpected, yet inevitable realities of life. Our presence in the bad is just as strong as the good, since we have thought about it in advance. We are more aware, confident and able to think through the mess, since we already thought of the worst possible outcome. This, all known as negative realization or what stoic philosophy calls, premeditation malorum.
You can move through life a lot less stressed, anxious and worried. As the worst has already happened in your mind. So that when it does happen in reality, you’ve already envisioned it and you can act. Think of an NFL Quarterback that has planned for a situation. He can act accordingly since he has visualized outcomes. All great athletes have this in common. Tom Brady and Serena Williams.
The unexpected blow is heaviest and hits the hardest. But, if we think about it in advance, does it actually happen? Does it hit that hard? Is it that heavy?
