It may surprise you to know that some of the biggest names in comedy are still showing up in comedy clubs all over the country. Big names like Kevin Heart, Dave Chappelle and others. Why?
These men and women that can be spotted on the street and make millions of dollars are still showing up where it all started.
The reason is they love the work. They love the art of the work. The purpose is to show up to workshop the craft. Today, that is what we’ll talk about.
By spending time working on their craft they get better. They can see how small groups of people react to jokes and perhaps how audiences change over time. They love being in front of crowds and the big crowds don’t always happen. Before their success in comedy and movies, it all started somewhere. And in order for them to stay relevant, and sharp with their skills, they keep showing up to the same clubs and they watch. They perform. They learn from other comedians.
These comedians are interacting with their work in a deep way. They’re interacting with their work in an artful way. This is what mastery looks like. This is how you can become great at anything. Becoming a master.
So, are you taking the humble approach to your work?
Are you interacting with the work you love in this way?
Are you showing up and doing the work regardless of who’s watching?
Do you trust the effort you’re putting in?
Do you love the craft?
