It's Not a Race
It can be a challenge. To see your friends succeed. Maybe it’s in their field of study. In parenting. In marriage. Their life appears to be going the way they want. Then you look at your life and start to question. You look at your failures. Your shortcomings. Your inability to have a career you love. The harsh words you tell yourself about being a parent. A marriage that’s on shaky ground. Why can’t I be more like [so and so]?
It’s not a race. This is not a competition. This is life. Your life.
The only person you should measure yourself against is you. The person in the mirror. Don’t measure your life using someone else’s ruler.
There isn’t even a finish line. When you think there is and you get there, the line has moved. What it comes down to is one step at a time followed by another step. And these series of steps get you where you need and want to go. Yes, you may move at a slower pace than some or a faster pace. Who cares.
The only race is with yourself. Where you show up each day. Don’t quit. Pushing yourself to do and be better. Aiming for the extra. And reflecting on today that you did your best and you beat your best from yesterday. Tomorrow, you’ll beat today’s best. This is the only race that exists. Except, it’s more of a marathon. You versus You.
Today, as the late, great, Nipsey Hussle said, “the marathon continues.”
You have your direction. Now go!
