It’s a bad idea to go against what your parents tell you. Culturally, for some of you it may be worse. You risk being disowned by the family or permanently damaging the relationship. Sometimes, you’ll just open yourself up to a lot of criticism and making it seem like you’re destroying your life.
Comedian, Hasan Minhaj talks about this in a conversation with Gary Vee.
Hasan’s dad is an organic chemist and his mom is a physician at an air force base. “The choices were doctor, lawyer, engineer, failure,” says Minhaj. You can imagine the pressure there. The disappointment that Minhaj was giving his parents. Even though, he was following his dreams. That did not matter to his parents. It was a bad idea to go against your culture and those expectations of your parents. But what if he hadn’t?
“You have to be cool with being like, ‘I went to the family wedding and everyone made fun of me and cool, I live outside the matrix.’ You have to be able to go to the party and be like, ‘yeah I’m the freak and that’s fine.’”
You have to be willing to do the thing you want to do, even though everyone else around you things it’s a bad idea.
Even if everyone is laughing at you. Why?
Because it’s your life and you should do the work you want. Live the life you want. As long as you or no one is hurt by your choices. Go for it. Be a comedian. A teacher. An artist. An entrepreneur. Be who you want to be. What you want to be. Even though it may seem like a bad idea.
Thought Provoking Questions : Are you willing to continue down your path, when everyone else thinks it’s a bad idea?
Daily I write and release a daily meditation. A quick read. Sharing wisdom and asking thought-provoking questions. Influenced by the obstacles, success and failures in my life and of others. Using history, books, current events, philosophy, and ancient wisdom. These writings are actionable, thought-provoking, designed to make your life better.
These writings are not to push a way of thinking on the reader or to force you into a certain philosophy or methodology. Rather to give you practical and real ways to handle life. This is an added tool. My writing is simply a discussion, a discourse, with all the material I read, watch, hear and consume.

I wanted to be a comedian. I placed second in the state of CA in college. However, my parents said “that’s not a real job”. So I went to law school which destroys your sense of humor. But being a lawyer has served me well.
First off, thanks for commenting. That’s really cool. And you can try again. A great way to unwind as a lawyer. I’m glad your profession has served you well.
