When you come home from work tired, annoyed or overwhelmed, remember that this can happen to them too. By them I mean your children. They may have gotten into an argument with a classmate. Children get tired too, perhaps today was a challenging day in school. They could have been in a group project that took a lot out of them. Have you ever been relieved to be home after a long day? Well, this too can happen to your children.
So keep that in mind when you want to bombard your children with questions about their day. Because like you, they may not want to talk much when they get home. Give them the space and time to open up. Let them have a snack, take a nap, read a book, play with their toys or dare I say, nothing at all. Time and space they need to decompress, relax and ultimately, open up.
“How was your day?” Predictable and cliche as it may be, this can wait.
