Pursuing Legacy Not a Trophy
I read about James Dobson in a book written by Pastor Rick Warren called, “The Purpose Driven Life,” which has sold something like 30 million + copies. Great book!
The story of James Dobson is about the achievements we chase not lasting. We eventually die, the success of your achievement will be passed by someone else and honestly, you’ll be forgotten about. Sports is a great way to look at this. Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Serena Williams, Aaron Judge. They are considered great players. However, if they haven’t yet, their success in sports will be taken over by the next person.
So don’t wrap your legacy around the award or trophy. It will end up in the trash. James Dobson was a talented tennis player and his goal was to be the best. Well, he was and he was given a trophy. It was proudly displayed by his school for everyone to see. 15 years later, that trophy was given back to him. Someone was doing some cleaning up in the school and they found his trophy in the trash.
The lesson James learned and shared is the only trophies that matter are the ones that never die, the ones that last forever. Focusing on the people you love and the service to others.
Legacy is eternal. Pursue that. Not a shiny reminder that will accumulate dust and end up in the trash one day. Pursue character, love, values, and a healthy way of living.
