If it’s broken, fix it. This seems like common sense advice. Although, as we all know, common sense is not so common. The obvious thing gets fixed. A water heater. An AC unit that is not cooling (my current problem as I write this). A car that has a thud. These are justifiable, tangible issues that need addressing. But, what about the other stuff?
Kintsugi is the art of practicing repairing something broken with gold or other alloys. Melted down to a liquid and used as a glue of sorts. To repair and to showcase that we all have cracks. We’re all broken. However, you must be an active participant in your repair. In your own rescue. These breaks are what make you, you. To not hide your flaws but show them, so that those coming behind you can see what makes a person. What makes a life. What makes you, beautiful.
Your mental health.
The hate you have for your job.
The separation with a spouse that is right next to you, but feels like your’re miles away.
The relationship with your children.
The mountain of debt you walk past each day and don’t acknoledge.
The looming health concern.
The history of diabetes in your family, yet you can’t stop yourself from the sugary drinks and highly processed foods.
Failed relationship after failed relationship.
Your substance abuse or the abuse you pass on to others.
No one is going to repair what’s broken. Only you. Not Washington D.C. Not your President or political party. Not your spouse. Not your sibling or friend.
You. So pick up the pieces of your life. Sort them out. Line them up. And let’s start doing the work of repairing yourself. So that you can have purpose again. You may feel stuck, or lost or confused. Or something else.
If it’s broken….fix it.
