Thinking backwards can help.
Conversations by text revealed a desire for someone I know to lose weight. I know this feeling as I have spent all of my life overweight, since I was a kid. I have taken great strides to correct that so I felt I was equipped to handle his concern.
My response:
“don’t focus on losing weight. Instead focus on doing 1 thing today to get you closer.”
Maybe that was good advice or not. However, the idea of having the weight disappear is the goal. But I don’t think in goals, I see in vision. I use something I call “The WHAT Framework” Read about it here, linked below.
Too often, we, myself included, drown ourselves in goals or the ideal situation. When we simply just need to get to work. Fear, resistance, being lazy, procrastination, are all the same thing. It’s the mind telling us not to do something because the mind does not like to be challenged or stretched. Yet, it is overcoming the fear, laziness, resistance and procrastination when we see the weight being lost.
So I told my friend to just go for a walk today. Listen to music or a podcast or simply hear the sounds of nature. When I started my fitness journey that is exactly what I did. A 15 minute walk turned to an hour. Which than moved me to my rowing machine where I do intense sessions for 45 minutes 5–6 days per week. Furthermore, I still go out for an hour walk with my daughter.
The meaning I hope he found and I discovered some time ago is, start small and simple. Losing 50 lbs seams like a big task. So don’t think about it that way. Simply have a plan to do something physical every day.
Than add in things as you go, such as: no soda, less bread and “I will not walk the chip isle.” That last one is for me.
Build up the identity with each action. James Clear says in “Atomic Habits” to let your actions be a vote for the person you want to become.
