"I know how to solve the problem," my daughter says. We just finished playing UNO and I'm unaware that there was a problem. "Oh," I say. "How do we do that?" My daughters reply, "we just have to love each other."
Now, I wish I can take credit for this moment. But, this was all her. I quickly hugged her and agreed. On Thursday, January 30th, we used Kobe Bryant talking about love. How that is the single greatest quality that all the greatest athletes have. Well, love is the single greatest quality any of us can have.
What if we did more from a place of genuine love? How would we treat others? What about the way we treat ourselves? What difference would that make in our lives, homes and communities?
I cannot take credit for my daughters words. But I can take credit and share that credit with her mother, on how we love her. She feels it. She knows it is real and we see her demonstrate that to us and her younger brother.
Love is understanding that we all share this earth and should treat it kindly. Its realizing we are all part of this greater whole. Its compassion for someone or something. Understanding that someone has it worse and lending a helping hand, or, cutting a check for a cause. To love is to serve, without condition or recognition. Because you want to leave this place better than when you arrived in it. Love is a responsibility that is not to be taken lightly.
To love is the one act that translates perfectly in any arena. While church and state are propagated to remain separate; we can all act with love. In all parts of life and it is love that yokes church and state. Love of country. Love of spirituality.
If only American politics approached decisions and policy from a place of love. What could that mean? We saw or at least have the evidence of what it meant for Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, and if you believe, in Jesus. We have the proof that love is real and powerful if you have children, family, a spouse or partner. Or if you've ever been in love.
That. What if we had more of that? To have and to evenly give away.
