If you end up in a different place in life than when you started, this is normal. You may feel as if it isn’t. Or that you failed. The truth is however, as you go along things will change. But, that change will never come if you do not put yourself in situations to try something new. To birth change.
Your major in college might change. Or you may drop out altogether.
You may get divorced.
You will quit the job you love, for another one.
Your forever home you’re living in just went up for sale.
Your parent died.
The car you’ve always wanted was just lost in an accident or stolen.
You thought you wanted to live in Austin, Texas, but you ended up in Atlanta.
How you start is not always where you finish.
All of that is okay. It is the way life works. Great, amazing things can come out of this. How you start is not always where you finish. The focus and the job ahead of you is to start something. See what works and what doesn’t. Repeat this process until you find the moment, the inflection point of all the work you’ve done. Finally, it works. Then, you continue on that path. Exploiting what works, time and time again. You become a success. This success can be anywhere in your life. In marriage. In college. In work, etc.
If you need further proof YouTube started out as a dating app. The creators Steve Chen, Chad Hurley would pay women $100 to post videos on their site. But this did not take off the way they thought it would, so they changed their plans to accept any video, of any kind. How you start is not always where you finish.
At Google, they give their employees time during their week to pursue other projects and things. They can volunteer or work on creating something on their own. Well, Paul Buchheit in 2001 created Gmail. It was for internal use only. It was a passion project of his since years before this. The idea worked so well, that Google released it to the world in 2007. What was just once a project started by an employee, ended up impacting the world.
How you start is not always where you finish.
The challenge is within you. When you start somewhere and see you’re headed in a different direction, you take a step back. You may even stop altogether. You are scared, thrown off and confused. How you start is not always where you finish. Remember that. The journey there will certainly be different and not what you expected. That is however, the beauty of starting something. By just starting you never go where you’ll end up. You’ll never know what can be found, created or had. You won’t know who you’ll meet or what idea may be born.
How you start is not always where you finish.
