Spending some time on Youtube and I ran into an ad by Noom. No this is not me supporting them. I found the commercial revealing.
A man would eat his meal and made the extra attempt to ensure his plate was clean. No sauces or crumbs left behind. Each meal, every time. It didn’t matter that he ate alone or with someone else. His habit was fixed.
The commercial shows the man dinning with a woman, then some friends. However, as the commercial progressed, he started to eat alone. Had his habit turned away people? Had his habit been so fixed that he didn’t even realized people were missing?
Then he discovered that he learned this habit of “licking his plate clean,” from his father when he was a kid. The sequence that followed was a flash back to his childhood, eating in front of his dad and his father with a military drill instructor look on his face.
Much of who we are, how we think, behave, how we eat, work and treat people is based on passed experiences. From childhood and beyond.
We think we’re in control. Wrong. Everything we have been through is. Everything we have heard, read, saw, experienced, felt or got introduced to. Most of us don’t control anything about us. But what this commercial is telling us all, we can discover what is not going right, why it’s not so and get on a path to fix it. Let’s start that work today.
What is a habit you want to change? And why…? Comment below.
