We’ve all been there at some point. Stuck. Not sure what to do or where to go next. It’s not that we have a shortage of ideas, but the ideas just aren’t working. Perhaps it’s in your business or side hustle. In your marriage or your career. Or you’re going through the process to create something completely new. Something that will improve the life of others. A problem you found and you believe you have the solution.
It’s quite inspiring to see and hear of people in the world that invent or create something. Steve Jobs. Sara Blakely. But how?!
Is it that they are just better at making something? Or could it be something else? Well, let us consider what science writer Matt Ridley says:
Matt says that innovation happens when your ideas “have sex” with each other. The combination of all your ideas in this adventurous, exposed situation. As sex is the rubbing of bodies, encouraging your ideas to “have sex” is the rubbing of your ideas together. Often, all your ideas create something new after they “have sex.”
Most of the ideas we have are fairly plain or singular. However, when you mix them up or combine them, that is where the magic happens. For example, you have plastic, electronics, metal and glass. Each on their own serves a different purpose for different things. When you combine them in the right order and way you get an iPhone, tada! Magic.
Ordinary items can create magic. Just by having your ideas “have sex.” These very ideas change lives and improve them. These ideas change economies at scale. These ideas are exceptionally profitable.
You may not invent the next car, or software or widget. That does not mean you do not have a power of your own that can be cast out and something can come from that. You have plenty of ideas. What if you allowed your ideas to “have sex.” Well, based on the example of Jobs, Blakely and so many more, we can see what is truly possible.
If it is humanly possible, you can do it too.
