All we hear about is the morning routine and how it sets us up for success. I wrote an entire article on why the morning routine was a scam, check it out HERE
We need more than a morning routine. Because that’s not the only part of your day that needs our best, that needs us to be great. We should all have a workday routine. Where we show up at the same time, set up our work station if needed and have set times where you respond to emails so they do not interrupt your work flow. For example, let’s say you start your work day at 9am. You might want to check emails at 10am in case something is urgent. It helps to have email notifications off or the app closed. Then check again at 1pm and one last time at 4 pm. You will be more productive and efficient since less people or issues take your time away. Rarely is there something that requires a response that second. Some one will come see you or call you if it did.
You should have roughly the same foods for lunch, the same snacks for the day and it helps to have the same podcasts or playlist. Or maybe a book while you eat lunch. Just as important it is to set yourself up for a work day success you should also set yourself up for the after work success. Whether you have dinner plans, a workout, a class of some kind, activities with your kids or simply going home to have dinner with your partner or even alone.
Having a “shutdown” routine is key. It doesn’t have to be major. Something as simple as turning off your laptop before you stop working. If you commute to/from work, try having no music or podcasts playing. Just drive in silence so you can have stillness and quiet time, we all need it.
Another great routine is for your evening. Your ability to wind down from the day to prep yourself for the next. This can be a work out, a shower, a book, a bedtime meditation, writing, or just stretching. You decide what you want. The most important thing is having a set bedtime, each night. I think limiting screen time is a great idea especially if you are in front of a screen all day for work.
Not all of you reading this work 9–5 monday through friday. Some of you are truck drivers, police officers, stay at home parents, unemployed, college students, warehouse workers, hospitality workers or work in the medical field. You may not be in front of a computer. However, your work day still requires structure so you can be your best, perform your best and who knows, maybe even put you in line for a promotion or raise.
The more structure you have the less you have to think. The less we think the more energy we have for other things that are important in life.
