Don’t Lose Your Control

Recently I lost it with my three year old. I was angry, filled with rage. Instead of sitting here explaining all that happened, I’ll say it’s all my fault. No reason or justification required. I, am in the wrong.
As the adult, the parent, it’s on me to remain composed and I did not. I took a moment and instead of walking away I acted out of character. It’s my philosophy in life that it doesn’t matter what happens to me, only how I respond. Yet, I abandoned my values. It takes years to develop them and seconds to burn it all down.
I am still mortified, troubled by my behavior. Well afterward my daughter was her usual, loving self. I on the other hand am remorseful for it all. I might wallow in this for a while.
The lesson here, don’t lose it. It’s best to just close the bedroom door and walk away. Anger is never a useful or effective passion. Yelling at your children is not an effective parenting strategy. What is really going on with us parents that we resort to those moments. Rage, anger, blinding our better judgments.
Today is a new day for me to practice the patience that parenting requires. If you’re a parent, this applies to you too. If you aren’t a parent than apply this to your work, your relationships and family. Today is a new chance for all of us to live within the values and virtues we want to embody. Words mean nothing, actions speak louder. Be the example you want to see. Don’t talk about it, be about it. Just do it. Harder in reality than in some blog post or email. Yet, these reflections, openly shared with you are what helps keep me accountable when I failed my daughter, and myself.
