How To Unfairly Treat Others
“Why can’t more people think like me? Ugh, why can’t you do it the way I do?”
Have you ever asked yourself this or made this statement? I have. Unfortunately this is wrong to treat people in this way. Especially when you do it to the people you love, like I have. Selfishly, my wife has been on the receiving end of that statement. Her response, “because I am me, I am not you.” Insightful!
How could anyone think that other people should be like them? How could anyone want others to be just like them?
A world full of people just like me? What would we learn? How could we connect with people? How can we love anyone or build anything?
There is an expression shared once saying, “if you want someone like you just date yourself.” I’m paraphrasing. However, we’re obviously unique. Each of us.
So the lesson here is, instead of wanting people to be more like you, think like you and behave like you, challenge yourself. Ask yourself how can I be less like me? How can I be more like them?
It’s part of putting our egos to bed for the benefit of the people and situation around us. If you want people to think more like you, then perhaps try thinking more like them. Think about how many issues will be fixed before they blow up. Think about how many arguments or fights will be addressed before they take over your day. Think about how clear communication with your partner or co-worker will be. By thinking more like them and in return thinking like you, we put our ego to the side and actively find ways to make the situation better.
No one has all the answers. I can say that when I put myself in the shoes of my wife in a situation, it gives me a better angle on what is happening and how to best handle it. When I am meeting with a client I can fully understand their obstacles better because I actively pursue seeing “things” through their eyes. Try it! It helps change many things, for the better.
