You have no control, virtually as a passenger. You may have lots to say. However, when it comes to when you arrive or where, that is not up to you. The driver is in control. The drivers route or schedule determines your fate. You might be able to pick the music on the trip and have your feet out the window. You can relax and know the driver or pilot will get you there.
What about your life? The decisions you make? The career you choose or the courses you decide to study? Have you thought about your money or health? Would you rather be a passenger or the driver?
“There’s more to life than being a passenger.” - Amelia Earhart
You simply cannot get to where you want to go without getting behind the cockpit or drivers seat yourself. Sure, someone else can fly the plane or drive the car. But you’re not living your best life in so doing. Your life is about You, taking control of You. Avoiding the need for someone else to drive you. They can give you directions, just not drive you.
Paying down debt. Losing weight or toning down. The purpose is taking control and realizing that you have it. That you are at the controls so to speak.
Too often you depend on something or someone else to get things started or to carry you along. Time to burst that bubble for you, stop!
Stop depending on external factors or other people. The time has come for you to get behind the wheel and steer your life the way you want to go. It makes no use complaining when you don’t take control.
This is meant to be empowering. To remind you that you are in control of your life. That the system is not keeping you down. That you do not need to rely on the government or anyone else to come in and save the day. They are not coming for you, you are on your own.
Lately, my writing has made many references to living life the right way, about experimenting and interacting with life. Being a passenger while someone else steers, well, that is not the best way to interact with life. As a passenger, you can have your head down looking at your phone for the entire trip. And completely miss all the beautiful views along the way. You may even take a nap or read a book. That all sounds lovely. The metaphor here is, life is completely passing you by. Your decision to let some external thing or event control your life. As a passenger you have no real influence as to where you go, how fast you go, or how long it takes to get there.
You allow yourself to be a puppet. Your strings are being pulled by your puppet master. You let political news control you or the changes in the stock market. They take over your mind first and just paralyze you from taking control. Yes, it could be systemic. So what.
There may be traffic ahead, so stay with it. The road is closed and a detour is needed, embrace it. The time it takes to arrive may in fact be far a long time. It’s worth it. You are in control of You. There is more to life than being a passenger.
