Do The Verb, Not The Noun
Austin Kelon has this great expression, “do the verb not the noun.”
For example,
Using the verb: I am a writer or I am writing.
Using the noun: I write.
One is a description (verb) of a thing.
The other is to identify (noun) a thing or be identified by that thing.
Using this in our lives is helpful. For instance, I am going to eat healthier (verb) compared to I eat healthy, (noun). You can use this for any aspect of your life. The key determination is are you embodying who you want to be or what you do or do you simply talk about it.
This applies to the type of parent you want to be. Professional. Partner and spouse. The kind of friend, neighbor and contributor to your community.
In other words, don’t talk about the thing. Do the thing. Just do it, as Nike has coached us.
So what do you want to do? It’s the question that will define your verb and your noun. Start the easiest way possible. Start just to do it. Start to gain momentum. Start because you life deserves it and so do those near and around you. Being around a person that only wishes sucks. Being around people that do it, is much better. Who do you want to be?
