Play The Hand Dealt
We each have circumstances we face. They aren't unique, they're just ours. To manage. To solve. To endure, to
deal with. For me, one of them is managing a lower back issue/injury for years. Some of you may be familiar with
this nagging injury due to your own experience, someone you know or you're in the medical industry in some capacity.
My L4 and L5 have a lot of wear and tear. My C4 and C5 in scans want to fuse together and I have arthritis in the joint where my spine and hip/pelvic bone meet. I'm 36.
For months I could not walk erect. I couldn't put on socks, dress myself or bathe myseIf comfortably. I could not sit for long periods and I've lost sleep due to the pain and discomfort. Plus, it has impacted my mood. As I've agonized leaning over my typewriter to write, I played the hand I was dealt. I also picked up my kids despite that not being a smart idea. In life as in poker - you play your hand. Kenny Rogers only got part of it right.
The part he got wrong was, we never leave the game. We play the hand or we fold the hand, but we never leave the table. We don't quit.Â
We stay in the game unless something forces us to leave, and that force better be life or death. Sure, maybe I could have taken it easy. I could have not picked up my kids and I could
have found an excuse to not write, until I was "100%." But that is not what we do, we don't quit, especially when
something is important to us. A goal, project, family, vision, idea or small business. We stay in the game, for the long run.
How else will we know what we are made of?
