We need doctors, lawyers, teachers and a many other professions. We would not live well without them. However, just because someone wants to be a doctor, lawyer or teacher does not mean that student loans are the only way to get there. Across America, there are individuals that go through school without student loan debt. While debt is the norm by societies standards, they are not the rule. Many have proven that.
So in the Twitter exchange the argument is presented, how does someone go to school without loans?
Well, they can work and save up. Also, picking a cheaper school. Plenty of people go to school part-time while they work full-time. Millions of dollars per year go unclaimed in scholarships and grants. The obstacle, they require a committed effort to apply, follow up with and secure this free money. For instance, Kristina Ellis was awarded over $500,000 in scholarship money. If anyone is called to be a teacher or doctor, these are significant professions of importance. With that comes great responsibility.
The burden of responsibility in pursuing a profession, such as these, starts the moment someone decides they want that career. Not on the first day of their first job. Part of the integrity it takes to be a teacher or doctor includes how someone decided to pay for school. So if someone does not have $40k laying around than they need to find another way. No one deserves a pass on taking out student loans.
We trust our children with teachers and our health with doctors. We don’t need these professionals to be distracted with loan payments while they teach or treat.
The student loan program needs to end. Why cancel debt and keep making new loans? It would be preferable to provide universal income than to cancel student loan debt. Our government wants to take the rich and corporations? Than those taxes coming in should used for universal free public college for the first four years. Beyond that the burden of responsibility falls to the student.
