The first time I heard “more is caught than taught” I heard it from Rachel Cruze. The expression tells us that our children learn by watching us. Catching everything we do and don’t do. Our expressions, body language, how we treat other people and even how we interact with money.
If you are often stressed around issues involving money, your children will also grow up to be stressed. Let’s say there is a major repair to your home or car and you get panicked. Your children will repeat that behavior when it happens to them. They watch how you spend money, how you give money to the person at the corner with a cardboard sign and even how you tip at a restaurant and why.
No, it’s not practical to simply change your reactions around money when your situation financially has not changed. When things are hard with money, that tension spills over into other parts of your life. However, it’s something we can all work towards. Getting a better handle of our money so that our calm around it is real, natural, and deserving. You absolutely deserve to be free of stress. Your children deserve to get the loving you, not the stressed out you. They deserve the ability to love their children and have the cycle of what I call “Generational Debt” end, with you.
