Belief In You...Could Be The Difference
We all have been there. Lacking belief within ourselves. No hope. No faith. Just at the bottom of the bottom. In the pit of how much we suck and we have a laundry list to why. The same is true for Steven Pressfield.
Many of the authors today that you know and recognize, honor Steven for his work as the reason they succeed as a writer and author. He simply is, inspirational, aspirational and transformative. But, it wasn’t always that way.
One of his classic books Gates of Fire almost died before eventual publication. He wrote the manuscript and his agent told him he could not sell it. Steven would have to cut 300 pages! Steven Pressfield as you can imagine was stumped, rooted to the spot.
In a more recent book by Steven Pressfield he writes, “I fell into depression and despair,” as he explains what having to cut out 300 pages meant to him.
A man names Tom Guinzburg wrote Pressfield a letter. At the time Tom was the president of Viking Press, a powerful and well known publishing company out of New York. Tom read the manuscript for Gates of Fire, by Steven. “There is a first rate novel in here,” read the letter. “I am confident you will pull this off.”
Sometimes it takes someone else to believe in you. I mentioned this in yesterday’s blog with Tom Hanks and his acting career (read it here). Pressfield writes about that exactly. “That note changed my life. I taped it to the screen of my computer and took courage from it every day of the six months it took me to get 300 pages out of that manuscript.”
Frankly, I am glad Steven did. As an admirer of his work and being often motivated by it.
You could be that person for someone else. Do not let your own thoughts stand in the way of someone else’s dreams or vision. On the contrary, you very well may find yourself depressed, in despair about where you are. Know this, there are countless, real examples of men and women who have kept going. They have overcome their own obstacles to become actors like Tom Hanks and writers like Steven Pressfield. Many have become successful entrepreneurs, entertainers, athletes, lawyers, doctors, accountants and teachers.
A little faith, a mustard seed size amount of faith is all you need.
