You go through life with a certain set of lenses. If you live life properly, then you will have experiences that will challenge your original views. You may as a result change your mind on something you once believed. By changing your mind, your values, your way of living does not mean you’re wrong. It means you are living life properly. And that should be your aim each day, month and year. Interact with life, at every turn.
It’s ego that makes you feel that you cannot change your mind. Ego that makes you feel that you know it all. That is why this blog exists, to remind us that our lives don’t have space for ego. If you think you know everything there is to know, then you’re right. Because your ego won’t allow you to learn anything else. For this reason, the pursuit of wisdom is key in every day life. Surround yourself around people that can help with that and consume information that can feed that. Become a modern day philosopher - a lover of wisdom. By not interacting with life and all of its parts, you are missing out on a life to live. That very interaction with life is the most effective instructor you will ever have.
The great philosopher Cicero was once presented with an argument. Someone claimed that Cicero was saying something now that did not line up with what he once believed. Cicero responded with,
“I live from one day to the next! If something strikes me as probable, I say it. And that is how, unlike everyone else, I remain a free agent.”
A free agent. Living life free of assumptions, opinions or being held by some standard. Not being tied down by some way of thinking or something you once believed. Free from ego.
What about you? With your children, spouse, neighbor, or friend. You fight tooth and nail to be right or to convince them about what you believe. Or they to you.
What if you’re wrong? What if ego stands in the way? What if you are being held captive by a set of assumptions that prevents you from seeing the world for what it is. Be a free agent. Put down the ego. Interact with life in a way you never have. The world has many shades and is multi-dimensional.
Along the way you will change your mind. You are not wrong.
