While you make plans to attend a cookout, go to the beach, or celebrate the fact that you have a day off, let’ s consider why. Today is Independence Day. Where the United States recognized and pushed through a new beginning from The British Monarchy of freedom and independence.
Because we do exist and are independent and free states are proof that courage and bravery, among a few others, was needed. Without them there would be no choice, no revolution, no constitution, bill of rights, no Forth of July and no day off for you. Historically speaking, today means more than just a paid holiday.
The comforts you enjoy today came in 1776, when independence day was recognized and adopted.
Imagine for a moment that you leave your family behind. Sitting in dark rooms for months if not years planning the separation, freedom and fight against Britain. Men dying for the very independence we have today. Risking it all to start something new. Courage. Bravery.
By signing the Declaration of Independence it was a death warrant. These men should have just signed their names in blood. Yes, they were scared. Yes they hesitated. But their names, their vote and their decision stood firm. And they were prepared to die for it. They embraced the challenge of their time.
What about you? Are you embracing the challenges of your time or are you hiding from them? Are you willing to sign your name on it? Are you willing to die for what you think is the right thing?
Or do you run at the first sight or hint of a challenge? You embrace today, July 4, as a paid day off. But do you embrace the shit you will face each day? You complain at the sight of traffic on the GPS. The wait time at Starbucks or your take out order without having enough sauce. Really? Are these the obstacles of your time?
No one will fight for you or fight your battle. No one will show up with bravery and courage unless you exhibit them yourself. You may hesitate. You may be afraid. You may doubt it will work. Regardless, you must show up. Today’s problems are different from the problems of our founding fathers. Still, the same virtues are required. Courage and bravery.
In order for independence to be recognized, first these men had to seek independence within themselves. The first act of courage and bravery, has to be from within. To embrace discomfort. To do the right thing and put your name on it, just like the names on the Declaration of Independence.
Whether today is a day you agree with or not, embrace the significance of today. What it all means and how you can exhibit this in your life.
