Race View from A Latin Man
Sadly, we have become a divided society and country. I hate it! How people treat each other and the constant black-white divide. I grew up with Latin and black people. I attend school with a mixture of White, Black and Brown. My experience with Race is different. However, I still remember the first time I was called a “SPIC,” and not knowing what that meant I asked my older brother. I may have been in middle school when this happened.
Are we forgotten about? Spanish/Latin people? When the country is focused on White and Black, where do we fall? Do we fall with Black people since we share some similarities in struggle, obstacles and access to certain things? Or do we classify as White just because we don’t know? Just because we aren’t Black.
While my local mall just released a Black Santa over the holidays as an alternative to the White Santa, where is the Spanish Santa? Brown Lives matter, too. As do Black ones. Spanish/Latin kids still get mistreated by police and are gunned down. We still have the same obstacles to capital as Black people to get a home or pay for college. Our net worth as Brown people is similar to that of Black people. Racism also exists for Latin people.
Just because Black and Brown people share some experiences does not mean we are the same. Respectfully, Black is Black and Brown is Brown. I can’t pretend to know all the experiences and trauma carried by a Black person. Just as a Black person cannot pretend to know what it’s like for a Latin Person. The history is documented and we see all the tragedies in the media today (which they love to show us to make money). However, collectively we do share that we are people of color.
So where does Latin culture and people stand today? Outside of capturing the Spanish/Latin vote?
