As a high school junior or senior, for some, college choice can be a big deal! Where their friends are going, what their major will be and the college experience. Living away from home for the first time of their lives.
However, there is a major problem. Letting your kids pick the school they want to go to. Kids will follow friends, their girlfriend/boyfriend, or pick a school because of a lazy river. There are many reasons to pick a campus. The clubs, activities, how they correspond to a major and more importantly, cost.
As a father, my wife and I have already had this conversation. Our daughter is 3! But, here’s the thing, having conversations with your children and partners early, helps later. Our daughter will not attend an out of state college, unless she has a scholarship to cover all costs of school. My wife and I are saving for her college education in proper investments. As parents, the role of a parent does not stop as they pick their college of choice. It continues beyond that. Quite honestly, for life.
For some reason there are parents out there that let their children make this choice. In part this is an added reason as to why the student loan mess is what it is. Parents not being parents and directing their kids to schools they can afford. Or schools that simply cost less.
So parents, if you cannot afford to pay for college tell your kids. Encourage them to find work when they can and to save. Starting off at a community college and finishing at a state school is much cheaper than out of state education. Work ethic matters more than the name of the school on a diploma.
Applying for scholarships should be a full time job for a college sophomore and beyond. Kristina Ellis is an example as she received over $500,000 in scholarships. Kristina was supported by her mother in her efforts to get those scholarships. More importantly, she was honest with Kristina that she could not afford to send her to college.
Key takeaway: do not let kids make an adult decision. If you want to step in to talk to them about sex, drugs, alcohol, friends and many other things, college choice needs to be in that conversation.
