In a sermon, by Pastor Mike Todd, I heard him say that faith is simple. It is a simple math calculation. Faith is 51 to 49. It isn't 100% as we think it is. Or how anyone tells us it should be. Faith in religion or spirituality, this equation fits. It also fits in the faith we have in ourselves.
Basically, we won't be 100% certain for or on anything. We will however, 100% end up nowhere without some effort. Without some faith. Some self-discipline. In matters that require discipline in our lives, 51 to 49 is also all we need.
I heard it described by an author as "more likely than not." Meaning, we are 51% of the time, going to do (INSERT THING HERE). Most of the time, that is the approach needed to take. Yet, we throw ourselves 100% into something and lose steam.
When doing something, it is important to give it all you have. As an athlete might say, they "left it all out there," indicating that on the field or on the court, they gave maximum effort and energy. But I’m not an elite athlete. Maybe you reading this aren't one either. In order to give it our all we have to show up the majority of the time and at 51% over that 49%, that is all the majority we need.
The equation introduced by Pastor Mike helps define the importance of trust, in one self and in what we believe. I believe it also represents that when we're 50/50, we are not likely to show up. However, that urgency of only having to be 51% is helpful for some of us. Just one extra degree, turns water from simmering at 211 degrees to boiling at 212 degrees.
So, lets give it one more. One more percentage point. One more degree. Show up, today. With just a little extra. Be more likely than not today.
